In this video, I talk about KDM Gold since in India it was a popular kind of Gold that was being sold from 1970-to1999. What is KDM? KDM is nothing but Cadmium which is a metal with an atomic number of 48, a melting point of 321.1 Degree Celsius and looks like silver.

Why is KDM linked with Gold?
As you know Gold jewellery is not usually made in a machine, unlike Coins & Bars. Jewellery has intricate designs and requires human interference while connecting the points. So the process of joining/connecting parts in the jewellery is done via Soldering. A solder gun which runs on gas or electricity is used along with an alloy strip or bar. The solder gun helps in melting that alloy so that the jewellery parts can be connected. Here KDM or Cadmium was used in the composition of 92% Gold and 8% Cadmium to solder jewellery.

Why don't we use KDM Gold now?
In 1999 BIS banned the usage of cadmium because while burning the metal toxic fumes were exerted, which harmed the karigars/people making jewellery and also harmed the consumers because it was a carcinogenic metal.

What do we use now?
Zinc and other metal alloys are used to solder jewellery now.
