Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper is one of the artist's most famous paintings, and depicts the moment when Jesus reveals to his disciples that one of them will betray him. Upon first looking at the painting, one may notice that it appears as if someone has pressed the pause button, with all of the figures around Jesus appearing shocked and surprised, except for the figure on his right, believed to be the apostle John. However, there is evidence to suggest that this figure may not be John at all, but rather Mary Magdalene, who was believed to be Jesus's wife and a founding member of the early Christian church.
One piece of evidence supporting this theory is the fact that the figure next to Jesus in the painting looks quite feminine, with long hair and a face that is depicted in a way that is consistent with Leonardo's written instructions for how to portray a woman in art - looking down with her head slightly tilted to one side. Additionally, the figures of Mary Magdalene and Jesus together form the letter "M," which is believed to stand for "matrimonio," or marriage. This theory is further supported by the fact that in the New Testament, Mary is described as a follower of Christ, and it would have been unusual for a 30-year-old man at the time not to have a wife by his side. It is therefore assumed that Mary was not only Jesus's wife, but also that she was carrying his child.
Another interesting aspect of the painting is the presence of symbols that are believed to be related to the Holy Grail. Some researchers have noted the appearance of a chalice, or large wine glass, in the painting, as well as two figures that appear to be transformed into knights. There is also a figure of a baby present in the painting, located next to Judas, and the apostle Andrew is depicted looking directly at it. These symbols, along with the fact that Leonardo divided the apostles into four groups, have led some to speculate that the painting may contain hidden meanings related to the Holy Grail. According to this theory, the Grail may not be present on the table in a physical form, but rather may represent Mary Magdalene herself, who was believed to have had children with Jesus that possessed special DNA that influenced human civilization.
Overall, while The Last Supper is primarily known as a depiction of the final meal that Jesus shared with his disciples, there is evidence to suggest that the painting may contain hidden meanings and symbols related to the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, as well as the Holy Grail.
