STORYLINE:
Russian soldiers started on Saturday to dismantle parts of their base near the Georgian village of Karaleti, six kilometres (4 miles) from the strategic central city of Gori.
The Russian checkpoint at Karaleti, sits on the perimeter of Russia's buffer zone on Georgian territory.
It appeared to be the first sign of such movement at the base ahead of Russia's announced withdrawal due to take place by the 10th of October.
Russia still plans to keep around 7,600 troops in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which the EU and US consider violations of its cease-fire commitments, and has refused to allow the EU monitors inside the regions themselves.
On Thursday, European Union monitors continued their mission in Georgia, with a delegation visiting the Russian checkpoint at Karaleti.
Russia and Georgia agreed to the EU observer mission as part of an updated cease-fire plan following the August war, which ended with Russian and separatist forces in control of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The fighting left hundreds dead and nearly 160-thousand people homeless.
