Why practice scales in music?
🎷Scales are the foundation of technique, sound, and articulation, connecting everything in music.
Scales and arpeggios are essential for progress in your musical journey, whether you read music or improvise. 🎶
Students are often confused about how to practice scales. 🤔
Here's my approach to teaching scales:
1. Start with major scales and arpeggios with up to 3 sharps and 3 flats, focusing on one octave: C major, F major, Bb major, Eb major, G major, D major, and A major. Know them inside out, without reading.
This may take a few weeks to up for 4 months. Visualize them and know their characteristics. Keep calm and practice regularly. 🎷🕒
2. Once confident, explore the challenging group of 6 scales: Ab major, E major, B major, F# major, Bb major, and C# major. The approach is the same and it might take several more months. That's ok, keep calm and practice regularly. 🎶🎷
3. After one-octave practice, return to C major and play full-range scales.
What's full range?
Start on the tonic, go up to the top of the range, down to the bottom, and return to the tonic.
Playing scles too quickly will hold your progress back.🚀
Take your time mastering scales and you'll thank yourself later. 👍🎵
I hope this helps those developing their technique.
Questions and discussions are welcome. 🎷🤗
