January 9th, 2023, became a day to remember, Tamarindo is known predominantly as a Beginner Beach !!!! That went out the window with a swell that sneaked through the forecaster's crystal ball, allowing Tamarindo to showcase its monstrous side when conditions aligned just right.
Though the surf forecast hinted at a modest 2-3ft, Mother Nature had other plans. We receive the same north swells as Hawaii, and they always bring days of rippable surf, although always untouched by the forecasts you have to do a little more research than normal. Once it filled in the atmosphere was electric, with waves reaching up to 10ft on the bigger sets.
The locals were frothing, students in the schools had a front row seat to mother nature's true power and sent most people to the beach looking for their step up board to catch the faster, bigger, GNARLY yes I said it Gnarly waves. The energy was so potent; it felt like the whole of Tamarindo was shaking in its wake.
The aftermath? Countless broken boards, shifted sandbars, and a beach that felt completely reborn. It's events like these that keep the surf community buzzing with anticipation - wondering what surprises 2024 might have in store. Join us as we look back to that very memorable day and keep your ear to the ground as North swell season is just around the corner.
