The VA Office of Inspector General (VA OIG) recently released an alarming report on the VA’s disability benefits program. According to VA OIG, thousands of veterans received unnecessary medical exams for disability benefit claims.
Although the overall number of unwarranted medical exams is relatively small compared to the total amount of exams performed by VA staff during this time period, it represents a critical breach in VA protocol. Unwarranted medical examinations can lead to incorrect diagnosis and improper treatment decisions being made—which could ultimately cause further harm or suffering to veterans who are relying on VA medical care.
The VA OIG report revealed that VA staff inappropriately applied additional medical exams to veterans who had already been diagnosed with various service-related conditions. VA regulations state that medical exams should only be used when needed to support a decision or to verify existing evidence of disability, yet VA staff disregarded this policy in some cases. This violation of VA rules not only wasted taxpayer money but also placed unnecessary demands on the VA healthcare system—which is already strained due to its overburdened caseload.
