The Selaron Staircase, also known as the Escadaria Selarón, is a famous set of steps located in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The staircase was entirely covered in colorful tiles, ceramics, and mirrors by the Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón as an ode to the Brazilian people.
The staircase consists of 215 steps and spans across two streets, Joaquim Silva and Pinto Martins. Selarón spent over 20 years of his life obsessively decorating the steps, using thousands of unique tiles he collected from over 60 countries around the world.
The result is a vibrant, mosaic-covered masterpiece that has become an iconic landmark in Rio de Janeiro. The staircase features a predominance of the colors blue, green, and yellow - the colors of the Brazilian flag. Selarón described his work as "a tribute to the Brazilian people."
Sadly, the artist was found dead on the staircase in 2013, but his unique creation continues to captivate and inspire visitors from all over the globe who come to marvel at this incredible work of public art.
