Since the late 1970s, there was a paradigm shift in Thamizh cinema landscape, thanks to the arrival of what we now call as the “Bharathiraja school of cinema” – his sensibilities resonated with the masses and it forced even mainstream filmmakers to set their films in a rural base. Among Bharathiraja’s contemporaries, Gangai Amaran is the one who is seldom acknowledged. For someone who became a director by accident, he has given multiple super hits in the 80s. Focusing on soft emotions as the core, Gangai Amaran chooses the settings and builds characters to complement it. Most of his films are a derivative of the Shakespeare line, “enmity between families comes in the way of lovers” immortalized in Romeo-Juliet.
Karakattakaran was written and directed by Gangai Amaran with his frequent collaborators, his brother Ilayaraja and actor Ramarajan. This movie was memorable and different from his earlier ventures is in its light-hearted treatment, screenplay and writing, went on to become a massive success. Karakattakkaran is assured its place in Thamizh cinema lore for Ilayaraja’s agenda-setting folk music and Goundamani-Senthil’s unforgettable comedy track.
