Pretty much every 90s kid has danced to his hits like 'Belly Dancer' and 'Smack That'. And while we all know him to be a damn good American singer, looks like he's an equally good human being. Akon has recently opened a solar academy in a bid to bring electricity to 600 million rural people in Africa.
The singer, who is himself of Senegalese-American descent, has set up this academy in Bamako, Mali, and its aim is to help engineers produce solar power. The co-founder of the academy, Samba Baithily, was quoted saying, "We have the sun and innovative technologies to bring electricity to homes and communities. We now need to consolidate African expertise." Another co-founder, Thione Niang, added to it, "We expect the Africans who graduate from this center to devise new, innovative, technical solutions. With this Academy, we can capitalise on Akon Lighting Africa and go further."
Now this is one good deed, not only India, but the entire world could learn from! Kudos to Akon and his fellow founders of the solar academy for coming up with such a noble idea
