Brisighella is a municipality in the province of Ravenna on the Lamone. The landmarks of the picturesque village of Brisighella can be seen rising out of the hilly landscape from afar: the pilgrimage church "Santuario della Beata Vergine del Monticino", the medieval castle complex "Rocca Manfrediana di Brisighella" and the "Torre dell'Orologio" are enthroned high up on three imposing chalk cliffs above the small town. Especially from the "Torre dell'Orologio", a large clock tower, there is a wonderful view of the wild and romantic surrounding area on the eastern foothills of the Apennines. Located in the shadow of Bologna, Brisighella has so far been spared the large tourist crowds. Even in the high season, only a few people stroll through the steep maze of alleys in the town of 8,000 people. Strolling through the narrow streets, you will discover old churches, colorful palazzi and cobbled squares with small bars and cafés.
It is probably the linchpin of the historic city center and more unique than almost any other "street"! The "Via del Borgo" runs above some shops and restaurants and is known above all for its architectural features: A light-flooded elevated street with characteristic arcade windows. The road was built in the 14th century and was initially used as a sentry post. After it was no longer used for defense, livestock was housed here - for this reason it is also called "Via degli Asini" (donkey street).
The clock tower of Brisighella is something very special: it was built in 1290 as a defensive tower and served as a defense system until the beginning of the 16th century. In 1850, after the tower was repeatedly damaged, it was rebuilt. The dial of the clock tower was also installed in this year - with a curiosity: instead of the usual 12 digits, the dial shows 6 hours. Once you have climbed the 300 steps to the clock tower, you also have a wonderful panorama of the valley, the surrounding hills and the other landmarks of the place: the fortified tower and the sanctuary, which are located directly on the adjacent hills and look down on the valley.
The Venetian fortified castle Rocca Manfrediana was built in 1228. A look at the cylindrical towers is enough and interest is aroused! At the beginning of the 16th century it fell into the possession of the Republic of Venice and was further expanded. During our visit to Brisighella we also visited the inside of the fortress: in addition to a few rooms and objects from that time, you can also visit the battlements with their loopholes. What was that time, wasn't it? And how did people manage to live like this back then?
