In this video I show how to build a portable and rugged gamma scintillation probe with a photomultiplier tube, a scintillator and a voltage divider.
If you want a probe just for mineral hunting or survey, you are fine with a plastic scintillator like BC408 or BC412. The old soviet plastic scintillators often have less than 50% of the light output of those. Sodium Iodide crystals have a much higher light output than the best plastic scintillators.
If you want to use it for spectroscopy or need a small probe with very good sensitivity there is no way around a anorganic scintillator e.g. crystal like NaI(Tl), BGO or others.
