Learn how to make a simple but effective dandelion tea which can do wonders for the eyes amongst many other benefits. This much maligned plant is often seed as a weed to be removed from the garden. But dandelion has dozens of uses and qualifies as a wild superfood. Owen Fox shows you how to make a herbal tea from the flowers and goes through some of the many benefits that eating and drinking dandelion can give.
You can harvest the flowers and stems. The stems are more bitter and the flowers more sweet. Once picked you can just wash and eat them. You can also blend them and use them in a juice smoothie. You can also dehydrate dandelion herb and turn it into a super-food powder. And you can boil up the dandelion flowers to make a tea.
Dandelion contain chemicals which are very good for the cell membranes in your body. It is especially good for your red blood cells, the brain and of course, the eyes.

DANDELION HERB: KEY FACTS
- The word Dandelion (Taraxacum official) comes from the french word meaning lion’s tooth. Its is in the daisy family.
- It is originally a wild plant from Europe and Asia but has adapted Very well to North America. Like many ‘weeds’ it thrives on disturbed soil and especially prefers moist soil.
- The key identifying feature is the deeply toothed leaves. There are a few lookalike plants which do not have so deeply toothed leaves. The plant can taste a little bitter on first try but, like many wild herbs, it is easy to get used to this.
- The easiest use is in salads raw or cooked in soups. Id the leaves are slightly older the leaves should be cooked. You can also use the flower blossoms to make a tea.
- Dandelion’s main medical uses are for general infections, bile and liver problems such as jaundice or hepatitis and as a diuretic. In herbal remedies it is often applied as an overall cleanser of the system and purifier of the blood.
- Dandelion is a frequently used herb in Chinese medicine.
- Dandelion is used with the burdock plant to create the drink dandelion and burdock which is very popular in the UK.
