Naoya Inoue will defend his undisputed junior featherweight championship against TJ Doheny in Tokyo in September, according to ESPN. Inoue, ESPN's third-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, will defend his WBA, WBO, IBF, and WBC 122-pound belts for the second time. The fight will air on ESPN+ in the United States in the morning. Inoue, is coming off a sixth-round TKO victory against Luis Nery in May. Almost 60,000 people crowded the Tokyo Dome to see the future Hall of Famer's sixth consecutive battle in Japan. Inoue's most recent bout outside of Japan was in June 2021, when he won in Las Vegas.
Inoue, 27 wins, 0 losses, and 24 knockouts, was felled in the first round but recovered to easily defeat Nery. That was the first setback of Inoue's career. Inoue will face Doheny with 26 wins, 4 losses, and 20 knockouts for the fourth time at 122 pounds, following victories over Stephen Fulton, Marlon Tapales, and Nery. Doheny, a 37-year-old Irishman residing in Australia, will be a significant underdog against Inoue. Since losing a decision to contender Sam Goodman, he has won three consecutive fights, all in Japan. Doheny was the underdog in two of the fights. Doheny is a former bantamweight champion. Both of his championship triumphs were against Japanese boxers, with an upset decision over Ryosuke Iwasa in August 2018 and a successful defense against Ryohei Takahashi.
Doheny lost the championship to Daniel Roman in a unification contest in April 2019. He also lost against Michael Conlan in August 2021. Inoue also has obligatory defenses against Goodman of Australia, who injured his hand in a stay-busy victory on Wednesday, and Murodjon Akhmadaliev.
