For herniated disc there are various type of treatment, If it is a small disc herniation the patient needs to rest for some time and it settles automatically. When it is a slightly larger disc and pressing upon the nerves produces a radiating pain along the arms in case of cervical disc, along the lower limb in case of lumbar disc in such situations we have to give little more treatment like physiotherapy or a surgery. In physiotherapy we normally give traction or decompression, whwn there is a herniation of disc it has come out of its place the traction create a vacuum inside a disc and makes the disc go inside to its normal position so the traction or decompression produces the same effect. Sometimes if the patient does not yield through physiotherapy or the disc is slightly larger it is an extruded disc totally out of its position and pressing up on the nerve in such cases we need surgery. So sometimes it is very emergency like a cauda equina syndrome in which large disc comes out and sits over the spinal cord or roots and patient may experience sudden weakness in lower limb means loss of urinary reflex in such cases emergency surgery needs to be done.
