This is a presentation given to referees with the Commonwealth Soccer Officials Association (CSOA).
CSOA supplies soccer officials for public and private high schools in Northern Virginia. The presentation was part of an annual pre-season training for referees.
High school referees make three mistakes in dealing with dissent from coaches and players:
1. They fail to recognize it when it happens.
2. They fail to deal with it.
3. They deal with it in a way that exacerbates the situation.
This training begins with a discussion of what the standard for sportsmanship is in the high school game, then talks about why referees must get better at identifying and addressing dissent before discussing the primary topic: "how to not make the situation worse."
