In March 2014 Russia annexed Ukrainian Crimea by invading with Russian troops who pretended to be locals. On March 16 Russia declared that all Crimeans voted to be a part of Russia and annexed Ukrainian territory. What Russia calls “Crimean referendum” was not approved or observed by any legal representative from any country, since all civilized countries declared in advance that any “referendum” in Crimea would not be approved until Ukraine gains control over the territory occupied by Russian troops. One day before the annexation (the “referendum”) the United Nations Security Council was trying to pass a resolution condemning the “referendum”, but it was blocked by Russia which has a veto right in UN – life is easy for a criminal if he is also a judge.
Since then not a single country has recognized Crimean “referendum”. The only country recognizing it, until recently, was of course Russia. Yet, the recent statement of Putin, shown in this video, has proved what everyone already knew very well - that annexation of Crimea was not a “referendum”, but instead a Russian operation on occupation of foreign territory – exactly the same as German occupation of European territories inhabited by German speakers before the Second World War.
