In Matthew 11, John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus the following question,
“Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” (Matthew 11)
Was this statement born of faith or unbelief?
...
Jesus answers John in code with the following Messianic signs:
he will make the blind see, (Isaiah chapter 29 verse 18, 35:5),
he make the lame walk (Isaiah chapter 35 verse 6 and chapter 61 verse 1),
he will cleanse lepers (Isaiah chapter 61 verse 1) ,
he will make the deaf hear (Isaiah chapter 29 verse 18 & chapter 35 verse 5)
he will raise the dead (implied in Isaiah chapter 11 verse 1 to 2)
he will evangelize the poor (Isaiah chapter 61 verses 1 to 2).
But Jesus answer is not so straight forward for Jesus avoids mentioning the seventh Messianic sign of “proclaiming liberty to the captives” (Isaiah 61:1).
Proclaiming liberty to the captives has a specific application for John being himself in prison.
Jesus answer did not have the important Messianic sign of “proclaiming liberty to the captives” (Isaiah 61:1) as he replaced it with an added remark.
Jesus said, “How blessed is anyone not offended by me.”
