MARBURG VIRUS
History, symptoms, transmission, consequences, Risks, prevention, Treatment and testing.
Marburg virus is hemorrhagic fever virus from which is considered to be extremely dangerous.
HISTORY:
Marburg virus was first recognized in 1967, when outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever occur simultaneously in laboratories in Marburg (the city in Hesse German, where the virus was first discovered)and taxonomic suffix virus.
The other cases were reported in 2012,2014,2017 and 2021 in different regions of world.
SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS:
Nausea, vomiting, chest pain and sore throat, abdominal pain and diarrhea may appear.
CONSEQUENCES:
It causes several viral hemorrhagic fever in human.
When symptoms become severe can cause inflammation of the pancreas, severe weight loss, delirium shock, liver failure, massive hemorrhaging and multi organ disfunction.
TRANSMISSION:
The Marburg virus is transmitted from fruit bats and spreads among human -to- human transmission.
RISKS:
The people at highest risk are family members and hospital staff who care for patients infected with Marburg virus and have not used proper infection prevention and measures.
Certain occupation such as veterinarian and laboratories or quarantine facility workers.
PREVENTION AND PRECAUTIONS:
Wearing protective gowns, gloves and masks, placing infected individuals in strict isolation and sterilization or proper disposal of needles, equipment and patients excretions
TREATMENT:
Until now, there is no specific treatment of Marburg virus disease.
Supportive hospital therapy should be utilized, which includes balancing the patient's fluids and electrolytes, maintaining oxygen status and blood pressure, replacing lost blood and treatment for any complicating infection.
DURATION:
Marburg virus was shown that survive for up to 4-5 days on contaminated surface.
TESTING:
Antigen capture enzymes, linked immune sorbent assay testing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR),and igM capture can be used to confirm a case of Marburg virus within a few days of symptoms onset.
