Today the French Defence Minister, Florence Parly has confirmed the official order of 42 Rafales by Indonesia. At present there are 8 countries which have chosen the Rafale to ensure their protection. In the Indo-Pacific, Indonesia becomes the second country to acquire the Rafale, after India. Besides this Dassault has also bagged many more deal in recent few months. UAE is one of the biggest customers of the French defence industry. Back in December last year, It has signed a deal for 80 Rafale fighter jets. This is till date the biggest international order ever made for the Rafale. UAE has also agreed to buy 12 Caracal military transport helicopters. The deal between UAE & France worth 18 billion USD. Back in November last year, Egypt has also ordered for 30 additional Rafales. Egypt is already operating 24 Rafale fighter jets. The deal worth 4.5 Billion USD. Greece has also ordered for 24 Rafales and in January this year it received 6 new Rafale fighter jets. The deal for 24 Rafale worth 2.4 Billion USD. In summary we can say Dassault Aviation has now total order of 42+80+30+24 = 176 Rafales. Out of the total order, 6 Rafales have already delivered to Greece, which means Dassault has order of 170 Rafales in the pipeline. Dassault aviation has capacity of delivering 24 Rafales per year. With this rate it will take 7 years for Rafale to fulfil this order unless they stretch Rafale’s production line, which is not easy because hiring, up skilling employees and setting up infrastructure for production is very difficult in aerospace sector. Considering the huge order of Rafales in pipeline with Dassault Aviation, it is a big concern for India. What will happen if India orders for additional Rafale? When will additional Rafales be delivered to Indian Airforce if order is placed sometime this year? Dassault will be completing the delivery of all 36 Rafales by April of this year. Indian Air force has shown keen interest in ordering additional Rafales. But now, since Dassault has huge production order them, the delivery future order of Rafales by Indian Air Force will definitely be impacted. So, the question is has Indian Air Force missed an opportunity here which is already struggling with declining squadron strength? We have also recently seen IAF chief pushing for MRFA for which timeline is shorter than MMRCA. The Air Force is looking for 114 Fighter jets as a part of MRFA which will cost close to USD 18 Billion. If Rafale qualifies for this order it will be the biggest order for them. In that case Rafale will be completely built in India just like SU-30 MKI. In past Dassault has also hinted the Transfer of Technology somewhere above 70%. If the Rafale deal progress between Indian and France, there will be some but not much impact on deliveries as it will be mostly locally manufactured.
