Every once in a while we get a chance to go on a long road trip or vacation outside the Midwest. This time we traveled to South Carolina and experienced the charm of Charleston.
We had the opportunity to visit Boon Hall Plantation - which is about thirty minutes outside of Charleston. The history of the plantation gave us many lessons - growing crops for well over 300 years and preserving the history on the grounds from the old smokehouse, the southern style mansion, the fields, and the oak tree-lined entrance.
But the experience of the entire plantation gave its most glaring lesson with the history of slaves. Touring the slave's homes and learning about the sensitive history was eye-opening beyond a textbook in the classroom. It was brief but was an important element to the entire plantation grounds.
