Do you know the story behind your food? This talk will examine the invisible reality endured by migrant farmworkers who grow Ontario's fruits and vegetables. It will also examine how persons with status in Canada benefit from the labour of racialized, permanently temporary migrant farmworkers from the South (primarily the Caribbean and Mexico). Together we will explore the oppression that migrant farmworkers cope with, and the resulting social, economic, and political marginalization. The talk will also address what efforts are being taken to challenge this and how youth can get involved.
Gabriel Allahdua is a former migrant farmworker from St Lucia, and now an organizer with the Justice for Migrant Workers (J4MW) collective.
Shane Martínez is a Toronto-based lawyer who litigated the first successful human rights case of a migrant farmworker in Ontario. He regularly represents migrant farmworkers on a pro bono basis as part of his work with the Justice for Migrant Workers (J4MW) collective.
