“The Beat Goes On” is at #16 today and will peak at #6 by the end of February. This will be Sonny and Cher’s last song to reach the top 40 until their 1971 hit “All I Ever Need Is You” which peaked at #7. “The Beat Goes On” will be used for the theme tune to “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour”. Cher’s younger (half) sister Georganne LaPiere attended Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, CA with several of the Bandstand dancers including Don Sanuskar, Robin Miller, Peggy and Dona Waggoner, Jeff Hight, Melody McMurray, Kim Powell, Tyra Golter, Bruce Trindle, Maureen Cohen, Toni Kashenoff, DeeDee Siciliano, Tina Lester and Sharon Bell.

In the news this week, the nation is mourning the loss of the Apollo 1 astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chafee, as their funerals were held 4 days ago on Jan. 31. The astronauts died on Jan. 27 after a flash fire swept through the Apollo 1 command module during a launch rehearsal test. It will be 18 months before the U.S. would send another man into space on the continued quest to reach the moon.
