A whaling ship, an environmental group's boat and an oil tanker have crashed in the Southern Ocean.

Australian environmental group, Sea Shepherd, sailed in between a Japanese whaling ship and an oil tanker to stop the fleet from refuelling.

The group say the collision involving the Japanese whaling fleet and their vessel, the Bob Barker, was not their fault.

Sea Shepherd says video of the crash shows their ship being squeezed and buffeted between the Japanese whaling factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, and the fleet's oil tanker, Sun Laurel.

Japanese whalers released video and photographs of the incident on Monday which they said show the Bob Barker ramming their vessel.

Sea Shepherd say the Japanese fleet is breaking the law by whaling in what has been deemed a sanctuary for the mammals.

Japan call what they do 'scientific whaling' which skirts a commerical ban. The country says it has a right to monitor the whales' impact on its fishing industry.

Sea Shepherd activists have clashed frequently with the Japanese fleet over nine whaling seasons during the southern hemisphere summer.
