Training physicians to communicate effectively in instances where a medical error occurs requires intensive training, says Dr. David Mayer of Medstar Health.
While physicians haven't traditionally been trained in the skills required to have these difficult conversations, Dr. Mayer advocates for additional training. He says that physicians can develop their abilities by working with "standardized patients"—actors and actresses who stand in for injured patients or their family members. Acting out these difficult scenarios helps physicians develop empathy and understand the patient's needs should an adverse event occur.
Education is the seventh of the "seven pillars" of patient safety. The pillars are:
1. Occurrence reporting
2. Assessment and investigation
3. Communication
4. Disclosure and apology
5. Process or performance improvement
6. Data analysis
7. Education
Dr. Mayer was a featured speaker at The Doctors Company's 2013 Executive Advisory Board meeting, a forum where dynamic though leaders explore topics of importance to modern medical practices in the evolving healthcare environment.
