The meibomian glands are glands in the eyelids that produce a thin clear oil which helps prevent your tears from evaporating. Due to inflammation, skin conditions and other environmental, lifestyle and systemic factors these glands may get blocked up and clogged. Over time, these eyelid glands may atrophy and die which means less healthy oils on the tear film. Unfortunately without healthy eyelid oils from the meibomian glands your tear film can evaporate extremely fast.

Dry eye syndrome or "dry eyes" is in fact a very complex disease with many contributing factors at play. Many people may experience occasional dry eye symptoms throughout life but chronic dryness can eventually lead to eye pain and blurred vision.
