"ONE OF THE HANDSOMEST VOICES TO BE HEARD ANYWHERE TODAY!" So wrote Washington Post critic Paul Hume (Yes, he of Margaret Truman fame) reviewing Barry Morell's Met debut performance of Madame Butterfly in 1958.
Barry Morell (1927 -- 2003) was an American operatic tenor, associated principally with the Italian and French repertoire. His New York City Opera debut in 1955 (Butterfly) and Met debut in 58, also Butterfly. Excellent tenor who sang internationally and was well received abroad, not always the case with American tenor of the period. He sang heavier roles later in his career. I believe this is the only recording on Youtube of him as Edgardo. Thanks to my friend Steve at Shicoff 1 for this relative rarity.
