In this video we see some bi-directional running along the Mernda Line along the Preston 'Skyrail' between Thornbury and Regent stations. Four level crossings around Preston are being grade separated onto elevated rail viaducts which will also see Bell and Preston stations rebuilt. However unlike other grade separation projects lengthy shutdowns of the rail line aren't possible as trains need to access the Epping Workshops; a major maintenance facility on the metropolitan rail network, particularly for the X'trapolis fleet.
So rather than conduct a lengthy shutdown and construct both elevated rail viaducts at once, only one has been constructed to allow trains to run on the line while the second viaduct and the stations are built. Between 30 May to September 2022 trains will operate bi-directionally on the single viaduct between Thornbury and Regent stations. A temporary timetable is in place to allow trains to utilise the viaduct; which has led to a reduction in peak hour services.
Of note we see X'trapolis set 861M-1631T-862M 873M-1637T-874M; the first to receive the updated PTV livery for 2022; which includes visability decals around the doors and the removal of Metro & PTV logos on the side (similar to the HCMT's).
