A Florida jury awarded Maya Kowalski’s family an additional $50 million nearly an hour after deliberating on what punitive damages the plaintiffs should receive. The jury agreed with the Kowalski family's claims, stating Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and its doctor's actions in imprisoning Maya were responsible for — and led to — Beata Kowalski taking her own life. Maya Kowalski and her family — who were the subject of Netflix’s “Take Care of Maya” — sued the hospital claiming its treatment toward the family and claims of child abuse pushed Maya’s mother to take her own life.
