In this video I show the beginning steps of teaching Caleb (now 9 months old) the trick of "take a bow". I am using the clicker as my marker to mark the moment he gets into the position I like. Right now, all I'm looking for is his butt to stay in the air. If he stays on his elbows for a moment then that is a huge success!
A hint about why I toss a treat away....
I found it to be much easier with Caleb to get him to bow by stopping his forward motion when returning to me versus trying to get him to take a bow from a standing position. When standing still he wanted to immediately go into the down positions simply because he was following the treat in my hand which looks quite similar to the down cue.
Just another example of working with what your dog gives you.... Don't be afraid to alter your training method or mental picture for the day's lesson if your dog teaches you he can do it better a different way than you planned. ;)
Have fun following along with Caleb's training and train on with your pup at your home.
