The Boerboel is a large dog that can reach up to 28 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 170 pounds. Aside from the majestic appearance, the overall personality of these dogs is really impressive as well.
If we translate it from the Afrikaans language, the name Boerboel means "farmer's dog" but this breed is also known as the South African Mastiff, taking the name from their country of origin South Africa. This means that the early Boerboels were versatile farming dogs. But the farmers' houses and themselves were constantly endangered by dangerous animals such as hyenas and lions, and so they were forced to increase the dose of strength and endurance during breeding. Today, aside from the many jobs they do, Boerboels are one of the most fearless guards dogs out there, ready to knock down intruders at any time. Regardless of their reputation for being aggressive or unpredictable, Boerboels are great family dogs, especially with kids, for whom they become overprotective.
