In the Swiss town of Sierre (Valais, a few kilometers from Sion) you can board the funicular to Crans-Montana. This is operated by the SMC, which also operates buses. The cars are very modern and you can take a local "Omnibus" service or a non-stop "Direct" service (each one operating once an hour). The views from the train are spectacular.
