For many, getting the California contractor license is a very smooth process. Typically you submit an application and within 6-8 weeks receive a test date.

To get licensed with the CSLB you will need to meet the following basic requirements:
18 years of age
USA Issued ID
Social Security or ITIN Number
Not Currently on Probation or Parole

In addition, you will also need to pass the California contractor license examination. Depending on which license you are going for you will either need to pass just the CSLB Law & Business exam or a trade test as well.

In order to get approved to take the test, you will have to have at least 4 years of journeyman level experience in your trade.

This experience must be verified by someone other than yourself. This person can be one of the following people:

Foreman/Supervisor
Fellow Journeyman
Licensed Contractor
Employer
Fellow Employee
Union Representative
Business Associate

Whoever you choose will fill out part 2 of your Certification of Work Experience. They will provide their information, how long they have been associated with you professionally, and provide a brief description of your skillset as it pertains to the license you are trying to get.

At this point, one of two things will happen.

Either your application will be accepted.... or the CSLB will ask you to provide proof of your experience. You will have the option of providing a variety of different types of documentation.

Once your application is approved, you will then go to take your California contractor license exam.
