"Liquid Gold" or convalescent plasma is an established treatment in many diseases. It's when you're taking plasma from an individual who's recovered from a disease and developed antibodies, and giving it to a critically ill patient to help them fight off the same disease.
Antibody testing has a very important role to play in finding convalescent plasma. The unique and difficult thing about COVID-19, however, is that many people who were infected and developed neutralizing antibodies don't even know that they were sick. Because of that, population screening is an important way to identify potential plasma donors, so they can then provide those antibodies to those actively fighting the disease.
In this video, Beckman Coulter President, Julie Sawyer Montgomery talks more about how antibody testing has a vital role to play in finding convalescent plasma.
