The rides keep getting better! After riding over 120 miles yesterday and camping for our second night at Roubaix Lake, we are off on a morning ride up the famous Custer Peak! Custer Peak is a MUST RIDE if you are anywhere in the central or northern hills. The trails are great and varied - a mixture of dirt and rock as you climb to over 6,000 feet and are treated to what may be the best view in the Black Hills. You can see four states from Custer Peak - it is simply breathtaking.
Next we drove another trail area called Black Fox and stopped at the campground alongside Rapid Creek for a picnic lunch, and then on to what was probably the best trails we rode all trip - Antelope Springs, a remote expanse of trails that took us all the way to the Wyoming border, through forests, across cattle country and more. We had a close encounter with a large bull sitting on the trail, found plenty of mud puddles to keep the kids happy, and enjoyed some great scenery.
But that wasn't it! As we turned back east, the trails became more technical and rocky, with some stretches with good sized drops, debris and boulders that were more challenging to navigate around. We found some cool caves to explore with the kids near Ditch Creek, and then, at the advice of the campground host, were directed to a remote area of the Summit Ridge ride, where we boondocked on a remote hillside and enjoyed a gorgeous sunrise, looking across what seemed like the entire state of Wyoming.
