15th ALH MK-III inducted in Indian Coast Guard
The 15th Advance Light helicopter ALH MK-III has been inducted in Indian Coast Guard at CGAE Bhubneshwar on 11 Oct 22. With this delivery, HAL has to delivery only one ALH as a part of initial order of 16 ALH by coast guard. The whole process of Induction of ALH MK-III started from March 2017 when HAL had received an order for 32 ALH MK-III for Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard to replace their aging fleet of helicopters with new improved version of ALH Dhruv MK III. HAL has commenced the delivery of ALH from Aero India 2021. Till now HAL has maintained impressive delivery rate of ALH Dhruv MK-III. Indian Navy has received around 13 of them. By the end of this year, HAL is looking to complete the deliveries of ALH MK-III to both Navy and Coast Guard.
ALH MK III
The ALH MK III helicopters have been indigenously manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The ALH MKII has 19 major improvements over various components compared to its predecessor. It is a World class helicopter in 5.5 tonne category. It is an all whether, multi-role, multi-mission state of art helicopter. It is fitted with a state-of-the-art glass cockpit and the cockpit section of the fuselage is of Kevlar and carbon-fibre construction; it is also fitted with crumple zones and crashworthy seats.
ALH MK III features
They feature state-of-the-art equipment including advanced RADAR as well as Electro optical sensors, Shakti engines, full glass cockpit, high-intensity searchlight, advanced communication systems, automatic identification system as well as SAR homer.
The features enable them to undertake maritime reconnaissance as well as carry out SAR at extended ranges even while operating from ships during both day and night. The aircraft has the ability to switch roles from an offensive platform with heavy machine gun to that of a benign one carrying a Medical Intensive Care Unit to facilitate transfer of critically ill patients.
Difference between ICG & Naval variant
ALH MK-III is an improved version of ALH equipped with Shakti-1H engines, new electronic warfare (EW) suite and warning systems, automatic chaff and flare dispensers, and improved vibration control system. The ALH Mark-III of coast guard and Navy has slight differences. The coast guard version has additional equipment such as a cabin mountain MG, High Intensity Search Light and a loud hailer. It is armed with a 12.7 mm HMG. The naval version of alh has additional equipment such as a modern surveillance radar and electro-optical equipment to carry out maritime reconnaissance as well as long-range search and rescue missions, an HMG and the capability to mount at least 2 ASW torpedoes.
