Michael Anthony's reaction: "Wolfgang probably wasn't excited, really, about being in Van Halen"
Former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony believes his replacement Wolfgang Van Halen "probably wasn't excited" about joining the band and had plans to do his own thing for a time. Anthony played in Van Halen until 2006, when Wolfgang took over as a teenager. He played on the band's final album, A Different Kind Of Truth (2012), and remained with them until Eddie Van Halen died of throat cancer in 2020.
The subject of Wolfgang comes up in an interview with Sally Steele, when Anthony is asked if he ever spoke to Eddie before he died. "No, unfortunately, Eddie and I never had a chance to really settle any differences that we had in the past or whatever," Anthony says. But at the end of 2023, Wolfgang performed at the House of Blues in Las Vegas with his new band Mammoth WVH, and I attended as his guest. And we chatted, sat and talked, and I got a lot of closure there. Valerie Bertinelli, Wolfgang's mother and Eddie's former wife was present. So it was an excellent night.
Aside from being a fantastic man and musician, Anthony adds that he does not believe Eddie was ever preparing Wolfgang to take over the bass job. "He played drums. That was his first instrument to play. And he knew a handful of guitar notes because, during the Van Halen reunion tour in 2004, Wolfie got out and strummed a couple of chords with Eddie at a few performances. But as Eddie Van Halen's child, you're going to be a multi-instrumentalist regardless."
