Gypsy Joe Harris was one of the most flamboyant and prolific fighters of the 1960s. Legally blind in his right eye since childhood, Harris developed a unique fighting style and often fought with his hands at his waist. Still, he beat an array of world-rated fighters - Kitten Haywood, Bobby Cassidy, Jose Stable, Miguel Barreto and decisioned reigning welterweight champion in Curtis Cokes in a non-title fight. After 24 wins, his only loss was to future hall-of-famer Emile Griffith. So popular was Harris that he became the first non-heavyweight contender to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. His career ended after it was revealed publicly that he was blind in one eye. #philly #gypsyjoeharris #boxing #boxinghistory #philadelphia #gypsyjoe #russellpeltz #peltzboxing #ring1
