Today, I embarked on an exciting adventure to find an abandoned cemetery south of The Pas. This hidden historical site is located on the east side of the road, just south of The Pas and north of the Andersen Inn and Suites billboard. A small oil pail marks the trailhead where we began our journey.
I first heard about this cemetery from John, a local resident, who had seen it as a child but couldn't remember its exact location. During a conversation with Peter, another local, they reminisced about the cemetery, and Peter decided to locate it. After finding it the day before, Peter invited John and me for a bushwhacking adventure to uncover this piece of history.
Our exploration led us to two fenced-off graves and several other potential grave sites. These graves are over 100 years old, dating back to a time before Lakeside Cemetery was established. Join us on this journey through local history and forgotten gravesites as we uncover the past.
***Note these graves are not to be confused with the Indigenous Burial Grounds across the highway.
