At the Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety at VCU Medical Center, future and current doctors and nurses practice basic and advanced techniques in a safe and regulated hands-on environment before ever coming into contact with a real patient. Using robotic manikins, students "practice on plastic" first, honing their skills while learning valuable social interactive tools for delivering important news to patients. The life-like manikins simulate heartbeats, breathing and other vital signs to replicate real-life patient care situations, from routine procedures to acute management crises.
