Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and Cleveland Cavs owner Dan Gilbert announced on Tuesday that they are partnering to form an investor group to bring an MLS expansion club to downtown Detroit.
An MLS expansion team has not been awarded to Detroit yet, but the ownership group offered a potential stadium design, which they abandoned once it was clear Gilbert had the land deal done and could go with his original plan of building a mixed use development there.
Commissioner Don Garber has announced the league will expand to 28 teams.
