Professor Tim Spector talks about current research into artificial sweeteners and reveals some surprising findings along with his own current views.
He reveals data from clinical trials which suggest there is no clear benefit for weight loss in swapping from a sugar drink to the diet drink equivalent.
Tim suspects these artificial sweeteners could also potentially be affecting our gut microbes.
He explains that adding unlimited amounts of chemical artificial sweeteners to replace sugar has to be thought through. He believes we should be weening people off ultra-sweetened products which could make them more likely to seek sugar.
