"Over the past two months we have eliminated some senior members of the Iraqi Police Department due to their continued involvement in the Baath party, which left a few positions open. One of those left open was the Dean of this police academy. Several people were questioned through the 18th Military Police Brigade and ultimately the decision was left to Mr Kerik of the New York City Police, the retired commissioner that is here, running the police force on the civilian side of the house. It was hands down Brigadier Hussein - I'm sorry - Brigadier Ahmed was chosen to be the new police commissioner of the Iraqi Police Academy."

STORYLINE:
The new chief of the Iraqi police academy has started work, taking command of hundreds of new Iraqi police cadets.
Brigadier Ahmed took over Baghdad's Police Academy after various police officers with Baath Party affiliations were fired from their posts.
He told the assembled cadets that their duty was to help Baghdad's citizens and to listen to their complaints.
During the official ceremony on Wednesday, US Army Captain Caruso stressed the need to keep the new academy free from Baath party ties.
The captain said Bernard Kerik, a former New York City police chief brought in to help with security, picked Brigadier Ahmed from several candidates. The US has refurbished the academy with new desk, chairs and air conditioning.
Corruption and post-war looting appear to be the chief concerns facing the new dean. Security continues to be a problem in the Iraqi capital.
On Tuesday, one US army soldier was killed and another was injured when attackers fired rocket-propelled grenades at American troops near a collection point for illegal weapons in the southwestern part of the city.
