adowa is a funeral and social dance drumming of the asante people of west africa. during the performance the pace of the music often accelerates, intensifying the dance drama.
krekete is one section of adowa music played in mampong asante, a town about one hour away from kumasi.
in this adaptation for drumset, i bring a petia supporting drum pulse to bass drum, the ntrowa gourd rattle voice to high hat, the dawuro iron bell timeline to cymbal, and some basic and varied atumpan lead drum patterns to toms and snare (with snares released). some of the patterns cue and reflect dance movements.
