Tamar of Georgia, known as the Holy Righteous King of Georgia, is the only person in Georgia's history to have held the title of both king and queen. She was the only legitimate child of George III, king of Georgia. They were part of the Bagrationi dynasty, who came to power during the sixth century and went on to reign until the early 19th century, when Georgia lost its independence. Tamar ruled the country alongside her father for six years, from the age of twelve! In the year of 1184 (eleven eighty-four AD), after the death of King George, Tamar was declared king of Georgia. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Georgia did not experience a golden age and territorial expansion like the one in which Georgia was ruled by Queen Tamar. From the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, and to the Trabizon Empire, that she established in Turkey, Tamar owned it all. During the reign of Queen Tamar, Georgia became the most powerful state in the Caucasus region. Several important battles took place during the reign of Tamar, the most prominent of which were the battles of Shamkuri in 1195 (eleven ninety-five) and Bassian in 1203 (twelve O three). These two battles are considered one of the most important and successful military campaigns in the history of Georgia.
