Alfarnatejo is one of the seven towns that form the so called Ruta del Aceite y Los Montes, and is also popularly known as "the Southern Pyrenees". Being so high above sea level, there it is a wonderful contrast in this area between the local stone and the lush vegetation. This is because the peaks in its surrounding areas, such as the Doña Ana and the Tajo de Gomer, are some of the most breath taking in the province. Outside the village there is an old arch bridge over the Rio Sabar and nearby Fuente Conejo still used by villages for fresh water and due to the large water trough by shepherds for their entire goat heards. The original town was probably a farmhouse that grew into an urban centre in Moorish times, beside the Sabar castle whose ruins are still evident on the peak of the Alto del Fraile. The village name Alfarnatejo once was known as Los Alfarnates, a denomination of Arabic origin meaning "flour mill". The urban centre, where only around 500 people live, makes for an agreeable and tranquil lifestyle and where on many of the ancient streets you can find some of the oldest buildings in the province.
