What a mini session is:
15-30 minute session with limited images.
They could be for specific things like holiday cards, or just general fall family sessions.
Clients usually come back a few times per year, over multiple years.
They also create advocates for you as a photographer, and you’ll find a lot of wedding and commercial referrals come from clients you’ve met, or stayed in touch with by doing minis.

Why I like them: makes an incredibly efficient workflow, and will make you a lot of money if done correctly.


Best times of the year.

I find offering them for specific events is easiest. Specifically off season events to generate income when you’re not busy. I personally always run them on Sundays, since I’m a wedding photographer primarily.
Holiday sessions, Valentines day sessions, Mothers day sessions.
In the summer, you can run beach sessions, or in the fall, family sessions are incredibly popular if you live in a place where the leaves change colours.


Pricing strategies

There are calculators out there that will be like ‘I want to make $5000 today’ and it’ll split it up.
I think those are dumb.
Rather than that, I would personally look at what other people have done in the past.
Not to directly copy them, but there’s a chance the market has already been set, and people in your local area are used to a ballpark price on mini sessions.
You can either go low, or high depending on a few factors.

I personally shoot on location when possible so I don’t have to set up any sets.
But if you live in a place that is cold in the winter, you might have to.
There are likely studios or spaces you can rent. They don’t have to be conventional either. Okay
Just somewhere with good light that represents your brand well.

For actual dollar amounts. Around here $150 - 350 seems pretty standard for the mini session, and 5 to 10 edited images.
While you could include all the images you take in that price, it’s better to offer individual image cost beyond what’s included. And also offer a full gallery buyout for an additional price.

Say you’re doing $300 for the mini session price - my strategy would be to price the full gallery buyout at something like $200. Which is less than the session fee.
Then individual images for purchase are $25 or $30. So if they want 8 additional images, it’s better to just buy the gallery straight out.

PLEASE be transparent about this pricing before the session.

You can also price the full gallery buy above the cost of the session, but I have some sort of weird internal thing that makes me feel a little scammy, and I don’t think it leaves the best lasting impression.
The idea is you want these people coming back over and over. I’d rather go for the long term $5000 sale over the immediate $1000 sale.



Marketing tips
Build some social media advertisements in Photoshop, or Canva. Better yet, make some videos yourself in Premiere.
If you’re looking for any sort of organic traction on Instagram, it’s kind of requirement to make video content now. Either on Reels or Stories.

Pre-release.
Since there are a limited number of slots available, it’s smart to build scarcity. Let people know there are only 10 available.
You can always open up a second day if they sell quickly.

Release day:

Spend a few dollars in paid ads on Instagram or Facebook to promote to your local area.

Now you might be like - Facebook? Who’s on Facebook? The 50+ crowd is becoming dominant on the platform. They’re a big target market when it comes to these style of sessions.

Another tip if selling around a specific holiday is to suggest that these sessions can be a gift for family members.
I’ve had incredible success doing these offers a few days before Christmas.
As a last minute gift idea, it’s great.
