In 1895, an unsuccessful attempt by Hawaiian royalists to restore Queen Liliuokalani to power resulted in the Queen's arrest. Queen Liliʻuokalani transcribes Aloha ʻOe while under an 8 month house arrest at Iolani Palace.
The song was inspired by a notable farewell embrace given by Colonel James Harbottle Boyd during a horseback trip in 1877/1878 to the Boyd ranch in Maunawili on the windward side of Oʻahu.
