John Harvey Carter was a pivotal figure in shaping Sacramento's architectural landscape, contributing to both private commissioned residences and commercial structures, as well as playing a key role in the establishment of the American River Parkway. With a portfolio encompassing over 400 buildings in Northern California, Carter left an indelible mark on the region.

Adding to the unexpected charms of Sacramento, The Nittler Residence which was built in 1963 by John Harvey Carter stands out as one of the rare homes situated on a suburban hillside in the area. Karen and Najib stumbled upon this distinctive property while perusing homes for sale in their neighborhood, and the story of how they came to own it is both surprising and perhaps fateful to some. The residence retains much of its original character, boasting features like wood paneling, terrazzo flooring, a spiral staircase entry, and copper facade fireplaces. Its unique layout seamlessly accommodates the needs of the family of five, with the yard, patio, and hillside areas flowing effortlessly from the rear of the home.
