Another day, another island, the group heads to our next stop on our South American Journey, Isla Isabela, Galapagos. Isabela is one of the youngest islands in the Galapagos archipelago, and the difference from Isla Santa Cruz is immediately apparent.

The ground is covered largely by sharp, black volcanic rock, the beaches are littered with lava tubes and tunnels, and the vegetation seems much less developed due to the lack of soil. Even the streets seem to be a crushed gravel with very little actual pavement on the entire island.

With just one full day to explore the island, we decided on renting bikes to cover a lot of ground quickly. Starting in Puerto Villamil, we made our way West along the coach, as we moved past La Playita, Playa del Amor, Tunel de Estero, and the El Estero mangroves where we managed to spot some pink flamingos relaxing in the sun.

We also visited a few other local landmarks, including the Isabela Tortoise Center, and the Wall of Tears (Muro de las Lágrimas). There is a rich, and interesting human history to the Galapagos Islands that often gets overshadowed by the amazing wildlife.

The history of the Wall of Tears is not a nice one. The wall was built over 14 years back in the 1940s and 1950s by prisoners who were sent to Isabela Island. The establishment of a penal colony here was an easy choice for authorities as they knew it was virtually impossible for anyone to escape from the remote island. As for the wall itself, it was built by the inmates by hand.
