Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph vs Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph Navy: it's on! The luxury sports watch battle of the 2000s spills into the modern era as we compare two discontinued versions of Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin's premier sports chronographs.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore requires no introduction, but we'll review briefly. Launched at Baselworld in 1993 and quickly pushed into production, the Royal Oak Offshore chronograph has defined the modern oversize watch and oversize sports watch.
Today's 42mm Royal Oak Offshore 26170ST is part of the "Themes" series that spawned the Audemars Piguet Safari, Volcano, Panda, Bumble Bee; our featured watch is the Offshore "Navy" for obvious reasons.
Inside the Offshore Chronograph's hulking stainless steel case rests a modular chronograph caliber with an in house Audemars Piguet caliber 3126 base. The movement is self winding and boasts a 50-55 hour power reserve, stop seconds (hacking), a quick set date, and hand finished surfaces capped by a solid gold winding mass. A Dubois Depraz chronograph module provides the complication, and 100 meter water resistance keeps the elements out.
Each Royal Oak Navy features a blue lacquered mega tapisserie dial with blue chronograph registers and white gold arabic numerals. A date window with magnifier resides at three o'clock.
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph 49150 generation 2 is the watch that made the Overseas relevant in the luxury sports watch class. Previously too small and too delicate, the 2004-2015 Overseas Chronograph generation II started trading blows with the Offshore, Rolex Sea Dweller, and Patek Philippe's Nautilus and Aquanaut pair.
This 42mm stainless steel Vacheron includes the blue lacquer dial that bowed as an option in 2012. A set of white gold hour indices and hands share dial space with a triple register chronograph and a "grande date" double digit date at twelve o'clock.
A Maltese cross motif adorns the bezel, and a screw-down crown and chronograph pushers maintain the 150 meter water resistance. Thanks to a soft iron inner cage, the Overseas is antimagnetic up to 25,000 amperes per meter of magnetic field density. The image of the Italian naval vessel Amerigo Vespucci graces the steel case back.
Inside the case, a Vacheron Constantin caliber 1137 automatic movement provides 40 hours of power reserve, a quick set function for the date, and a vertical clutch with column wheel to engage and cycle the chronograph functions. The movements includes 37 jewels for smooth operation and beats at the same 21,600 vibrations per hour as the Offshore chronograph.

Functions include hours, minutes, small-seconds, date and chronograph. The watch also measures 14.3mm in thickness and 53.9mm from lug-to-lug.
